With former Formula One™ drivers, Le Mans 24hrs category winners, erstwhile A1GP stars and an array of race drivers that are the future of international sportscar racing, the Honda-supported SPEED EuroSeries, the only FIA authorised international series for cars in the CN sports prototype category, is proving ground for drivers and teams en route to Le Mans Series competitions around the world.
Featuring state-of-the-art 2ltr Honda-engine cars conforming to the FIA Appendix J Article 259 regulations each generating around 260bhp, the series is a proving ground for aspiring endurance racers aiming for the top and, with the budget for the season a fraction of the cost of other race series (around Euros 120,000 per year in total), is also attracting squads from LMS aiming to use SPEED as a driver development team for their LMP outfits.
With over 60 drivers scoring points in the multi-marque SPEED EuroSeries in 2011, the package is proving to be one of the fastest growing series on the European motor sport stage and, with SPEED drivers having already progressed to senior LMS & ALMS championships, is the highest profile championship offering drivers the realistic route to the top.
SPEED EuroSeries is delighted to be associated with Honda Motor Europe (HME) which will use the events as the backdrop for its continental PR programme and are present in the SPEED paddock with their Honda Race Centre. HME also provide the Honda CR-Z hybrid racer as the SPEED Safety Car to lead the grid of Honda powered cars to the green lights.
In 2011 competitors battled it out over 12 races at LMS rounds and the spectacular Italian V8 Superstars event at Donington. Each meeting featured two points-scoring races for the European drivers’ championship, team and manufacturers’ title. Drivers in SPEED are competing for a fantastic range of prizes on offer including the opportunity for winning drivers to test drive LMS cars. Running on Cooper Tires and using Shell Racing Fuel, SPEED EuroSeries gives competitors the opportunity to shine on the biggest sportscar stage in sportscar racing.
